Fifth Kalima Astaghfar | Significance, Reciting, and Benefits
Fifth Kalima, known as Kalima Astaghfar, is a profound declaration of repentance in Islam. The word “Astaghfar” itself is derived from the Arabic term “Ghafara,” meaning to seek forgiveness.
This Kalima is a supplication that Muslims recite to ask for Allah’s forgiveness for their sins, both known and unknown, major and minor. It emphasizes the importance of turning back to Allah with humility and sincerity.

Translation
“I seek forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, from every sin I committed knowingly or unknowingly, secretly or openly. I turn to Him in repentance from the sin I am aware of and the sin I am not aware of. Indeed, You are the Knower of the unseen, the Concealer of faults, and the Forgiver of sins. There is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.”
Significance of the Fifth Kalima Astaghfar
The Fifth Kalima represents an essential aspect of Islamic teachings: the continuous need for repentance and seeking forgiveness from Allah.
The Holy Quran and Hadith emphasize the virtues of frequently turning to Allah in repentance:
- Quran (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:222):
“Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.”
- Hadith:
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said,
“By Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him more than seventy times a day.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
This Kalima reflects the essence of human humility and recognition of our shortcomings, as even the Prophet (PBUH), who was sinless, would often seek Allah’s forgiveness.
It serves as a reminder that everyone is in need of forgiveness and that no one is free from the possibility of sin, whether done knowingly or unknowingly.
